Life, as the saying goes, is a journey, not a destination.
CH&E co-founder and vice president John Caldwell understands the wisdom
and depth of this philosophy. It helps, of course, to be multi-talented,
curious, and have an open mind and heart - which John does.
At home in venues from ski slopes to symphony halls to scaffolding, John
Caldwell is a man with many interests and talents. A classically trained
musician, he has performed extensively with the Harrisburg and Lancaster
symphonies, productions at the Fulton Opera House, and American Music
Theater. In addition to playing the cello, John also plays the trombone,
guitar, and fiddle (with a new-found interest in Irish folk music.)
John grew up in the Washington, D.C. area where his father worked for
NASA. At the tender age of seven, John began taking cello lessons. Today,
John is the one giving lessons - to private cello students on weekends.
He is also a certified professional ski instructor who spends most winter
weekends teaching at Ski Roundtop.
He came to Lancaster to attend Franklin & Marshall College, and never
left. While a student at F&M (then all-male), he met a nursing student
at Wilson College. Mariann was to become his college sweetheart, and
soon after graduation, his wife. John and Mariann are the parents of Rebecca
and Christopher.
Over 35 years ago, John became acquainted with Pete Egan and then Jack
Heckles. From their friendship and shared values, a business formed and
has grown extensively over the years - as well as the bonds of friendship.
One of the hallmarks of CH&E has always been a social conscience,
to help those less fortunate, and make the world a kinder place. Whether
it is in his role as a trustee of the YWCA, business leader, or devoted
family man, John enriches those he meets on his journey.
